insuranceIn this article Auckland Valuer Paul Nilsson questions whether jewellery valuers have kept up with changes to domestic insurance policy wordings as they apply to jewellery.

Most Valuers would agree that when they write an insurance valuation on a piece of jewellery for a consumer their primary objective is to protect the owner.
Here are two scenarios where that objective may not have been met.
Consumer A had an estate diamond brooch professionally valued at $6000 and listed separately on their insurance policy for that amount. A year later they lost it and discovered it would cost $12,000 for the new replacement their policy entitled them to. However the insurance contract meant that the settlement was limited to the specified amount of $6000. Their Valuer had unfortunately only valued the brooch at its second-hand value.
Consumer B inherited their mothers’ engagement ring and had it valued for $2,000 and listed on their policy. When they made a claim 5 years later they discovered their policy only entitled them to a $400 pay out. The Valuer had valued it for replacement with a new one but their policy was for market value (indemnity value) not replacement.

Ces sites sont trouvés par les consommateurs qui surfent sur le Web à la recherche d’un expert en bijoux. Ces sites représentent-ils une bonne option pour le consommateur? Je ne le pense pas. Même si je peux comprendre qu’une certaine commodité et son faible coût annoncé puissent être attrayants, il est important que le public comprenne les risques qu’il encourt en utilisant un service d’expertise dont, en fait, les réalisateurs auront jamais entre leurs mains les articles concernés.

The blind leading the blind?

There are more and more adverts for on-line jewellery appraising popping up in most countries and an every increasing amount of businesses offering this service. These websites are being found  by consumers who surf the web searching for a Jewellery Appraiser.  Are these places a good option for the consumer? I do not believe that they are.  Whilst I can appreciate that the perceived convenience and low cost can be attractive, it is important that the public understand the risks that they are running in using an appraisal service that has not actually examined the item being appraised.

One of the most dreaded phrases ever heard in my office goes something like “I want you to have a look at this ring, my husband just paid a lot of money for it on eBay”
I always have an unpleasant feeling that the interview is going to go badly and there may be tears.
How refreshing then when today I was able to give a client some very good news indeed. The client produced a ring which looked as though it had been made from salvaged bits of pre-existing jewellery.  A rather high (for UK taste) wire claw setting with baguette shoulders on a split shank.  It did the job but without much in the way of style. However, it was what was in the central collet which made the customer’s trip worthwhile. Continue reading »

Last January, a jewelry designer sent me an e-mail asking if the pearl market had crashed. She said she was searching on eBay for “black pearl” and the auctions came up with black pearls at ridiculous prices; costume jewelry cost more than the winning bids on these supposedly “Tahitian” pearls being sold out of China.  On pure impulse, she bought a “genuine Tahitian” black pearl necklace (see photo) when there was one minute left, and got it for $24.99, including priority shipping from Shanghai. The unique diamond set in the engagement ring

As an independent jewellery valuer I have the pleasure of appraising beautiful jewellery every day, and I meet some very interesting people along the way.  None more so than a gentleman by the name of John Alderson, who had a very special diamond ring for me to value recently. You see, the diamond was no ordinary diamond; this round diamond was cut in a way I had never seen before. When I mentioned this to John I noticed a little twinkle in his eye, ‘that’s because I designed the cut and cut it myself’ he said. Now my ears pricked, how fabulous, a unique experience for me, how many people can say that they designed and cut a diamond all by themselves? Not many for sure!
